He left his home when 17 years of age for the United States and landed at Johnstown, PA, and immediately volunteered as a private in the Mexican War. He was a true and faithful follower of Gen. Scott, being present at the surrendered of the City of Mexico. When the war was over he came to Kentucky. In the year 1857 he located at Irvinsville to work at his trade as cabinet maker and undertaker, making all the coffins that were used in that day, even to his own, and his wife's. He married Miss Eliza Peterson, daughter of Peter L. Peterson, who preceded him to the grave three years. This marriage occurred March 7, 1859, and was blessed with five children: James Anthony, Mrs. Robert Fuller, Mrs. Sherman Harney and Mrs. Thomas Taylor. Anthony and Mrs. Taylor have already been called home. Mr. Heinrichs joined the Methodist Church about 1860 or 1861, having been raised a Catholic. Leo Heinrichs who was assassinated at Denver, Colorado, recently by an anarchist at a church service was his nephew. His home was the home for the preacher, whom he always met with a hearty welcome and a handshake that showed how glad he was to have him in his home. He was made a Mason in Orien Lodge, No. 500, about 1879 and he not only loved the order but the brethren also. Mr. Heinrichs was a devout Christian, a loyal Mason, a loving companion and a devoted father, a man pure in thought and he will be much missed in the community.
