On her way up the Mississippi river to Natchez to receive the silver service presented by the state of that name, the vessel will stop at various cities along the route. Ballinger in this community will be glad to know that the reorganized Lancaster Bank, at Lancaster, Ohio, of which he is cashier, re-opened this month with a fine business. The Lancaster Gazette says: "Under most gratifying conditions the doors of the Lancaster Bank in the Martens block were thrown open to business and the managers and officials are well pleased with the day's work. Many called to leave deposits and to extend their best wishes for a happy and prosperous existence. "Mr. C. P. Cole, the well known glass man, is president of the new bank and Mr. O. L. Ballinger is vice president and cashier. The latter is an experienced banker, having been connected for years with several large banks of Cincinnati, and previous to going to the Queen City was associated in the banking business at Cynthiana, KY. He comes to Lancaster with the best of testimonials and will be valuable acquisition to Lancaster citizenship. "This morning each visitor was presented with a carnation by pretty young girls, Misses Ballinger and Green, who had charge of the fragrant blossoms." "In a talk with Mr. Ballinger he stated that the business of the day was beyond their expectations and some of the substantial and best citizens of the county and city had called and opened accounts." LOCUST GROVE Son of Virgil Wood, died 1 Apr. 1909. LOG CABIN Fri. 23 Apr 1909 Vol. 14 No. 17 Pg. 3 Col. 5 SHADY NOOK W. H. MAFFETT born 2 Jul. 1857 and died 7 Apr. 1909. His wife Miss Samantha Harding and two daughters; Mary and Pearlie survive. On brother, J. L. Maffett resided in Lincoln Co. One daughter, Ida, died just over two months ago. Funeral in Republican Church. [Probably buried there also. dh] LOG CABIN Fri. 23 Apr 1909 Vol. 14 No. 17 Pg. 4 Col. 4 W. T. HANDY Died 19 Apr. 1909 of cancer. William Torrence Handy was born in Cincinnati, 6 Jun. 1855 and was 54 years old. SOn of Robert Handy and Eliza Jane Torrence Handy. His father was native of Maryland. W. T. Handy went to Yale and was a college mate of President Taft. After college he spent about three years in Colorado managing a cattle ranch. In 1881 he married Miss Mary Welch and came to Cynthiana to reside on the farm about 25 years. He is survived by wife and three daughters, Nancye, Priscilla and Hattey Handy. His first child a son died while young. He is also survived by a half sister, Mrs. Gerrard of Anaconda, MT. Buried at Battle Grove. LOG CABIN Fri. 23 Apr 1909 Vol. 14 No. 17 Pg. 5 Col. 4 SUICIDE! Fessie Berry, committed suicide on Monday at his father's farm two miles north of town by shooting himself through the heart with a single shot gun. He pushed the trigger with a piece of stick which was found near his body. Buried at Battle Grove Cem. He was 22 and the son of W.F. Berry. LOG CABIN Fri. 23 Apr 1909 Vol. 14 No. 17 Pg. 8 Col. 4 BAREFOOT Ephriam M. Hill died 31 Mar. 1909 at age 79. He has one wife dead and one living, two children dead and 8 living. His first wife only lived 18 months after they married. He has lived with his second companion for 50 years the 28th of last January. Burial in Mt. Pleasant Cem. Robert Lee Lucky died on 15 Apr. 1909 in Lexington. He was 30. He was born and raised in this neighborhood. Married 10 years ago and is survived by wife and three children, six brothers and friends.
