News July 13, 1961 Former Monroe man badly burned in explosion. Ivan STRODE, 35, formerly of Monroe Co critically burned in a gas explosion in the basement of a house in Monticello IN last Thurs night; son of M/M Jim Tom Strode of R1. Had lived in the house with his cousin, Leon STRODE, also formerly of Monroe Co until Leon moved to Scottsville 3 weeks ago. Ivan had returned to the house & told the pesent occupants that there was an item in the basement of the house he wished to get; was given permissiion to enter and shortly the explosion occured. The woman living in the house said she'd noticed the smell of leaking gas that afternoon; her husband had turned off the gas supply at the bottles/tanke abt 6:30. A neighbor said he saw Mr. Strode run from the basement following the explosion; clothing in flames. Got into his car which he'd left running, drove to the other side of the street, stopped & asked police or fire dept to get him to the hospital. Was rushed to White County Hospital. His mother, a cousin Luther Strode and & Mrs. Leon Strode visited the injured man. The wall of a black porch was completely blown away with minor damage done by the fire. Deaths: Graveside services for Burnella Danette Crowe, 5-week old d/oM/Mr Marvin Crowe held Tuesday; child died at the Monroe Co War Memorial Hospital 10 July 1961. Bro Ross O. Spears officiated. Survived by parents and a sister, Rachel Gayle Crowe. No burial location given. Samuel J. Thompson, 79, died Norton's Infirmary, Louisville 3 July; native of Monroe Co; s/o the late Dr and Mrs. E R Thompson, lived most of his life in Louisville. Was a carpenter at Ford Motor Co; member Carlisle Baptist Church and Plumb Masonic Lodge. Services 5 July at a Louisville funeral home with burial in Memorial Gardens in Shively. Survived by wife, Mrs Lena Miller Thompson; three sisters, Mrs. Bertha Patterson of Ford KS, Mrs Belle Page of Decatur IL and Mrs Willie Marshall of T'ville. Four brothers: Tas of Dodge City KS, WIley of Ceina TN, Edwin of Jacksonville FL and Charlie of Decatur IL. T'ville residents attending funer included Mrs Willie Marshall, Mrs. Ronald Bushong, Mrs Ronald Hodges, Mrs Hazel Gentry & Mrs Brenard Butler and son Ted. Others included Charlie thompson, Mrs Belle Page and M/M W A Shelton, all of Decatur; Mrs Leslie Spears of Nashville and Mrs. Waller Harris of Franklin KY. John A Anderson, 82, Moss TN died at Lady Ann Hospital in Livingston TN 6 July 1961. Graveside services were held at the Moore Cemetery 8 July with Bro Eddie Monroe officiating, Yokley Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Survived by 5 sons: Montie, John, Ranzie and Ira, all of Moss and Otis of Indianapolis IN. 4 daughters: Mrs Pearl Walker and Mrs. Mackie Walker, both of Celina, Mrs. Belvie Meadows and Mrs Iline Odle, both ofMoss. Sister: Mrs Sarah Shutman of Bukesville KY. Mrs. Victoria Gee Guinn, 79, died at her home on Route 3, 5 July 1961; native of TN; d/o the late John Johnson and the late Mrs. Margarette Bean Johnson. Survived by 6 daughters: Mrs Olivesr Hale of Columbia KY, Mrs. Omer Short of Moss TN, Mrs. Stanford Moore, Mrs. AUdie Weed and Mrs Henry Hix, all of T'ville and Mrs. Zelma Cherry of Red Boiling Springs. 2 brothers: Harlie and Haskel Johnson, both of Moss. Services at John Edd Yokley Funeral Home, Bro Hanley Crowe officiating, burial Bailey Cemetery. Mrs. L. E. Heilman's sister dies 8 July. Mrs. Laura Blackaby, 64, of Pleasureville KY, sister of Mrs. L. E. Heilman of T'ville, died of a heart attack at home Sat Night. She recently had visited Mrs Heilman here, returning home Tuesday before her death. She was a teacher in the Henry Co school system 30 yrs. Survived by 2 sons, A W Giles of Eminence KY and Edard Giles of Jefferstown. 4 sisters: Mrs Heilman, Mrs Frances Montgomery of Prospect KY, Mrs Ruth McCardwell of Pleasureville KY and Mrs. Gobel Kelly of Lake Orinon Michigan. Attended U of Louisville School of Medicine in Sept 1956;, in June 1958 selected to engage in research sponsored by the Sister Kenny Foundation at the Rehabilitation Center, General Hospital in Louisville. Received his medical degree June 190; member Alpha Alpha Chapter of Phi Chi Medical Fraternity; charter member of the U of Louisville Medicine Alumni Association. Completed a 12-month rotation internship June 30; awarded Cesrtificate of Approval from St Eliabeth Hospital in Dayton OH. The doctor and wife have Karen, 5; Pamela, 3 and Kevin 1, resides in Gamaliel.
