JOHN W. BAKER an independent Republican candidate for Sheriff of Rockcastle
County to be voted for at November election 1897

Negro deputies may do well enough in some localities, but Marshall James
had better not send his negroes to the mountains unless he wants the
stuffing shot out of them.  Most of the mountaineers are republicans and
nearly all the law breakers of their region are of that faith, but they
won't submit to being handcuffed by a Negro.  Interior Journal
