Submitted by Mary Lou Hudson Middlesboro Daily News, Middlesboro, KY Sept. 16, 1921 Suspects Freed After Proving Alibi In Chas. Guy Case Vanover and Vaught Prove They Were At Stony Fork On Night Of Shooting Bulletin: At 3:30 o'clock this afternoon, Guy's condition was reported as about the same. He was not resting quite so well today. Fred Vanover and Earl Vaught, the two boys who were held in connection with the shooting of Special Officer Charles Guy at the station Tuesday night, were freed last night. This unexpected turn came after they had established a conclusive alibi to the satisfaction of county Judge Van Bever and county attorney Patterson. Yesterday, Officer Huston Ball, County Attorney Paterson, F.A. McDaniels, special agent for the L. and N. railroad, and a stenographer went to the Stony Fork neighborhood to investigate the alibi claims of Vanover and Vaught had made. There they found chestnut leaves in a vacant house in the old Drummond's camp, where the boys claimed they had spent the night. The Rev. Oscar Asmus testified that the boys had kept him awake from 9 o'clock until about 11 o'clock Tuesday night with their laughing and talking. This included the time that Officer Guy was shot. He testified further that he saw the boys leaving the house about sunrise. Other testimony was found that strengthened the proof that Vanover and Vaught were at Stony Ford on the night the shooting occurred. ______________________________
