Prominent among the older citizens of Oldham County is Allen Adams, father of of John R. Adams, county and circuit court clerk. He was born in Jefferson County, October 8, 1804, and is the son of Frances and Mary (Kirkwood) Adams, natives of Pennsylvania, who came to Kentucky nearly 100 years ago,and finally settled in Oldham County, near Goshen, and died there. Allen 'adams lived on the farm in Jefferson County until fourteen years of age, when he removed with his parents to Oldham County. He has been twice married---first, on August 25, 1838, to Miss Susan Vance, daughter of Robert and Nancy Vance. Susan died August 10, 1850, leaving four children: Robert F., James, John R.,and Agnes. The second marriage of Mr. Adams was to Mrs. Augusta (Taliaferro) Thornton, born in Oldham County in 1825, and a daughter of James and Harriet (Mayo) Taliaferro, natives of Virginia and Newport, KY, and of Italian and English extraction. Her father was a captain in the State militia, and now resides in Oldhamburg. To this second marriage were born six children: Mayo, Sue L., Coleman and Richard (twins), William T., and Carrie V. (1866-1875). Mr. Adams has a farm of 350 acres, and is a member of the Presbyterian Church, at Goshen.
