He lives in the most mountainous and wilderness part of the state; is 88 years old, very inform, and those in his vicinity say they have no doubt he was a Revolutionary soldier, from what they have heard. Should he not be on the list of North Carolina [which may not be the case, for he is remarkably ignorant] he will perhaps be no more before he could have an opportunity of proving his revolutionary services. The affidavit of General Elijah Comb is attached to his petition and affidavits of the same import can be procured, but the one was considered sufficient. He valued his property in the currency of our state. His wife is nearly as old as himself, and if he was a soldier, he needs the munificence of government as much as anyone who ever received it. I would be glad to hear from his petition as early as practicable. Respectfully, Rich. Apperson Perry County, KY On this 11th day of May, 1826, personally appeared in open court, being the court for the circuit of said county and a court of record being so made by the authority of the state aforesaid and a court of unlimited jurisdiction… “Joshua Allen, a resident in said county, age 88 years, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth upon his oath make the following declaration, [etc]…: “That he, the said Joshua Allen, enlisted and served during the whole war on the __ day of July 1776 in the State of North Carolina in the company commanded by Captain William Sharp in the regiment commanded by Colonel Pasley [Paisley], who was commanded by General Greene in the line of the state of North Carolina on the Continental establishment. That he continued to serve in said corps until the close of the war, when he was discharged from the service in Guilford County in the state of North Carolina; and that he hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension, except the present; that his name is not on the roll of any state except North Carolina; and that the following are the reasons for not making earlier application for a pension: “He is extremely ignorant and lives in the most mountainous part of the state where there are but few who know that they are entitled to a pension from government, notwithstanding their service in the Continental army; that it has not been very long since he has ascertained that he was entitled to a pension, and that he did so ascertain his claims on his country for its assistance. He knows of no one in his county who could direct him in what way he should proceed to inform the government of his claim to this munificence. That he is quite infirm and unable to travel any distance, which prevented him from going to another county to procure some person qualified to do his business for him in making this application. “And in pursuance of the Act of the 1st of May 1820, I do solemnly swear that I was a resident citizen of the United States on the 18th day of March 1818, and that I have not, since that time, by gift, sale, or in any manner disposed of my property or any part thereof with intent thereby to diminish it as to bring myself within the provisions an Act of Congress entitled, “An Act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval services of the United States in the Revolutionary War,” passed on the 18th of March 1818; nor that I have not, nor has any person in trust for me any property or securities, contracts or debts, due to me; nor have I any income other than what is contained in this schedule hereto annexed and by me subscribed: “He owns about 12 acres of land worth about $40, some 3 or 4 hogs worth $3.00, one gun worth $10, 3 cows worth $30. That this is all the property owned by him. He states that he follows the occupation of farmer; that he is very inform and scarcely able to work at any occupation whatever; that his family consists only of himself and his aged and infirm companion, Mary Allen, his children having all left home. Signed Joshua Allen. That since the 18th of March 1818, the following changes have been made in his property: that in that year he had only one ?cow worth $6, and his bedding and clothes.” “Elijah Combs states that he is well acquainted with old Elijah Allen and believes him to be a man of truth and integrity and believes his foregoing statement to be true. He knows said Allen to be needy and very old and infirm. This 11th May 1826, signed Elijah Combs.” Submitted by: Nancy Poquette npoq@hotmail.com This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/kyfiles/
