Pension Application VA ASHLOCK, William S 1161 19551 Kentucky William ASHLOCK of Nelson Co in the State of Kentucky who was a private in the Com commanded by Captain BATES of the regt commanded by Col BOGERS in the Va line for 6 months Inscribed on the Roll of Kentucky at the rate of 20 Dollars __ Cents per annum to commence on the 4th day of March 1831 Certificate of Pension issued the 20 day of Sept 1833 and ________ Wickliff Bardstown Arrears to the 4th of Sept 50 Semi anl allowance ending 4 Mar 10 60 Revolutionary Claim Act June 7, 1832 Recorded by Dan BOYD Clerk Book E Vol 7 Page 1 State of Kentucky County of Nelson SS On this 12th day of November personally appeared in open Court before the Justices of Nelson County now sitting William ASHLOCK a resident of Nelson County State of Kentucky aged Seventy years who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress, passed June 7, 1832 -- That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers and served as herein stated -- under Colonel Benj ROGERS of Virginia Halifax County - he was commanded by Captain James BATES of the State of Virginia - he enlisted as a soldier of the _______ for six months to go to Guildford - he came back and afterward was called upon to go to York in pursuit of Lord Cornwallis - he states that he entered the service in the year in which Cornwallis was taken and served 6 months. He states that he was at the siege of York - the second time, he was drafted as a private man. Wm AHSLOCK also states that he has no documentary evidence, and that he knows of no person whose testimony he can procure to testify to his service. He hereby relinquishes all claims whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and that my name is not on the Pension Rolls of the agency of any State. Q. When and in what ____ were you born? A. I was born on the 9th of October 1762 in State of Virginia Halifax County Q. Have you any Record of your age, if so where is it? A. I have it at home in a Bible given me by my Father, registered by hand Where were you living when called into service, where have you lived since the revolutionary war and where do you now live? When I was called into service I was living in Halifax County State of Virginia and lived there until I moved to Lincoln County Kentucky about 27 years ago - and I now live in Nelson County Kentucky. Question How was you called into service; were you drafted Answer we was called into service by _______ & enlisted the service as a drafted soldier. Question Did you ever receive a discharge from the service and if so by whom was it given and what has become of it. Answer I received a discharge from Capt BATES in the year [blank] I had the discharge I thought at home, but upon examination cannot find it, I presume it is missing or lost There are many persons in my neighborhood and county who can testify to my character my veracity and good behavior John JONES Esqr states that he has known William ASHLOCK for 6 or 7 years that he has lived near him and believe him to be a man of veracity and good deportment Given under my hand this 12th day of Novr 1832 J ohn JONES April 10, 1937 Mrs. James S. JONES William ASHLOCK Chatham S. 1161 Virginia BA-J/MLB Dear Madam: Reference is made to your letter in which you request the Revolutionary War record of William ASHLOCK who served in that war from Virginia, and was a pensioner residing in Nelson County, Kentucky, about 1835. The record of William ASHLOCK follows as found in pension claim, S. 1161, based upon his service in the Revolutionary War. William ASHLOCK was born October 9, 1762, in Halifax County, Virginia; the names of his parents are not given. While residing in Halifax County, Virginia, William ASHLOCK enlisted in 1781, served as a private in Captain James BATES' company, Colonel Benjamin ROGERS' Virginia regiment to go to Guilford and after returning home went to Yorktown in pursuit of Lord CORNWALLIS and was in the siege of Yorktown and was discharged after having served six months. The soldier resided in Halifax County, Virginia, until about 1805 when he moved to Lincoln County, Kentucky, and from there moved to Nelson County, that state. William ASHLOCK was allowed pension on his application executed November 12, 1832, at which time he was a resident of Nelson County, Kentucky. In 1833, his post-office address was Bardstown, that county. No family data are given in the claim.
