Babbage.John.D.1845.Breckinridge.BIOS John D. Babbage July 22 1845 - unknown Breckinridge County KyArchives Biography Author: Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin JOHN D. BABBAGE, a merchant of Cloverport, and the proprietor and publisher of the Breckinridge News, was born July 22, 1845. He is the eldest son of John C. And Elvira J. Massey Babbage, who were natives of England and the State of North Carolina respectively. John C. Babbage was born in 1817, and while he was not quite young the family immigrated to the United States, and settled at Poughkeepsie, N. Y.; some years later his parents returned to their native country and he started for the West by way of Pittsburgh and the Ohio River; he first haulted at Louisville, where he engaged as a journeyman at the saddler's trade; a short time subsequent he went on down the Ohio and located at Cloverport, where he met the lady who became his wife. Shortly after he settled at Cloverport, he established himself in the saddlery business, in which he continued until his death, in December, 1884. He had filled the office of police judge in a very creditable manner for twelve years, was a true and consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and was also a charter member of the Cloverport Lodge, A.F.&A.M. His widow still survives him. John Davis Babbage received his education in the schools of Cloverport; he learned the saddler's trade with his father, with whom he remained until he was eighteen years of age; he then embarked in mercantile trade, carrying a stock of family groceries; owing to a lack of business experience this venture proved a failure, and he was compelled to start anew at the foot of the ladder; by dint of hard work; close application and strict economy in the divers pursuits of teaming, carrying on a news stand and the agency of the Adams Express Company, he was enabled to again open in the mercantile trade. About 1874 he purchased a small printing press and did job work, the outgrowth of which business is the publication of the Breckinridge News, one of the brightest and best conducted weekly newspapers in the State. In October, 1870, Mr. Babbage was united in marriage to Miss Maria J. Miller, daughter of Hon. Thomas M. Miller, of Hardinsburg; to their union two children were born, one now living, Ernest C. Mrs. Babbage died April, 1873, and in March, 1882, Mr. Babbage married to Miss Mollie Ditto, daughter of Franklin Ditto, of Meade County. Mr. Babbage and wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In politics he is a Democrat.
