Babbage August 22 1854 - Breckinridge County KyArchives Biography Author: Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, VIRGIL G. BABBAGE, attorney at law, was born in the town of Cloverport, Breckinridge County, August 22, 1854. He is a son of J. C. Babbage, who as born in the State of New York in 1817, and who came to Kentucky about 1846, settling at Cloverport, where he engaged in the saddlery and harness business, and later in life practice law, dying on December 7, 1884. The maiden name of subject's mother was Elvira Massey. She was born in North Carolina about 1821, and is still living. The children of J. C. And Elvira Babbage are as follows: Mrs. Elza Taylor, John D., Courtney P., Mrs. Lou Duncan, Virgil G., Mrs. Kate Rowland, Charles and Jennie. Virgil G. Babbage was educated in the schools of Cloverport, and at the age of eighteen learned telegraphy, and later took charge of the office of his native town, retaining the position one year. At the end of that time he took charge of the Brandenburgh office, and a short time afterward was employed in the main office of the Western Union lines in Louisville, in which city he remained until 1872. He returned to Cloverport in the latter year and engaged as clerk in the mercantile house of his brother, J. D. Babbage, in which capacity he continued one year, devoting his leisure hours to the study of law, which he had years before anticipated as a life work. He came to Hardinsburg in 1876, and for two years thereafter sold goods for Dr. J. M. Taylor, pursuing his legal studies in the meantime, and in 1878 received the appointment of master commissioner for Breckinridge County, a position he still retains. He was admitted to the bar in the spring of 1882, receiving license from Judge Little, of Owensboro and since that time he has been actively engaged in the practice of his profession in the courts of Breckinridge and adjoining counties. Mr. Babbage was married, October, 26, 1880, to Lizzie Foote, daughter of Ludwell A. and Sue P. Foot, of Breckinridge County. Three children have been born to this marriage: Taylor, Clara and Wallace. Mr. Babbage is a Democrat in politics; a strong advocate of temperance, and belongs to the Methodist Episcopal Church.
