"Death Rode The Wheels. And Mr. Wood Baird Dies Under His Automobile. The most appalling of all the automobile tragedies that have ever occured in this section was that in which Mr. Wood Baird met his death, Monday night of last week. "It appears that Mr. Eugene Baird, his son, Mr. Wood Baird, Mr. Charley Redford and Mr. Taylor Redford, all went to Louisville Sunday using a Ford machine. On their return Monday evening about dark, the party came down the Dixie Highway at the brisk, but not reckless, gait, and just above Horse Cave they suddenly whirled around a sharp turn and hit a chug-hole in the pike. Mr. Wood was at the wheel, and, in avoiding the bad place in the road, drove too close to the edge of the pike. The machine instantly turned turtle, and all the occupants were thrown out and almost instantly killed - living but a few seconds. Mr. Eugene Baird was badly shaken up, Mr. Taylor Redford had two ribs broken and Mr. Chas. Redford was badly bruised up. Mr. Baird's body was brought here to Mr. E. J. Jewell's undertaking establishment and prepared for burial. "The tragic affair created a tremendous sensation on account of the prominence of all the parties, and the popularity of the deceased. "Wood Baird was the son of Mr. Eugene Baird, who is probably the wealthiest farmer of the county, and one of the best beloved and most highly esteemed citizens therein. The deceased was a quiet, greatly liked young man, and was his father's manager of the estate of one thousand acres at Goodnight. He was one of the hardest, most industrious workers in the whole county, and of an even temper and sunny disposition that made his [sic] a great favorite with his many fdriends all over the county. "Mr. Baird was twenty-five years of age and is survived by the followingt: his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Bard, his sisters, Mrs. Harold Wilson and Miss Mary Baird, and a younger brother. The family has a host of friends all over the county, and there was universal sorrow over the tragedy. "The remains were interred in the Rogers family burying ground near Goodnight, last Tuesday."
