BATES October 29, 1880 Breckinridge County KyArchives Obituaries Breckinridge County Herald-News, Hardinsburg, Ky., Wednesday, October 16, 1980 THE "REMEMBER WHEN?" COLUMN, 100 years ago, October 20, 1880 Departed this life, October 29, 1880, (should be Sept. 29th) Mr. John BATES, at his residence four miles north of Rock Lick, on the Cloverport and Bowling Green Road, in the 79th year of his age. Mr. BATES was born in Fayette County, Kentucky in 1801, and lived there until about seven years of age when his father emigrated to this county with his family. In his young days he succeeded in accumulating a considerable sum of money, but as he advanced in years was overtaken by bad luck. He was a member of the Baptist church for over forty years, in which faith he expired, leaving a large family and many friends to mourn his loss. The family has the sympathy of the entire community in their sad bereavement. BATES, John D. 30 Jan 1801 -- 29 Sept 1880 single tombstone husband of Theodosia BATES, Theodosia 11 Dec 1806 -- 22 Jan 1893 single tombstone wife of John D. I also found pictures of their tombstones on the Find-A-Grave.com website I accessed through Ancestry.com. Information on them was posted by Jan PATE. I found the death record for a Samuel D. BATES on Ky, Deaths Index, 1852 - 1964 on Ancestry.com (years 1911-1964). His certificate #00600 lists Samuel D. Bates (born 07 Oct 1829 and died 17 Jan 1913) as the son of John D. BATES and Sarah DUNCAN. Samuel's son, T. M. BATES was the informant. This tells me that John D. BATES was married twice, and Samuel was a son from the first marriage. I could not find either marriage record; John D. and Sarah nor John D. and Theodosia. Samuel was not listed in 1850 census with his father. Samuel D. BATES was buried at the Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery, located in the north west section of Breckinridge County, near the Hancock County line. See his death record here in the "Death Certificates" section. I do not believe he has a tombstone. 1850 census Breckinridge County, Ky., District #1 enumerated 5 Aug 1850 by Thomas T. BATES, found on 1810 and 1820 census Breckinridge County. If he is, it would explain why John D. named his son Samuel D.(D for Duncan?) BATES. Samuel's mother was Sarah DUNCAN. Makes sense. Now to be proven. Just a thought. And, Rock Lick, Ky in Breckinridge County was located near the Hancock County line close to the Cabot and Easton Communities in Hancock County. My ancestors William T.W. DeWitt and wife, Lucy Ann Clark lived on a farm in the Rock Lick Community from about 1865 to 1910; farmers.
