He [was] promoted then by a commission signed by John Hancock, president of Congress, being duly _____ July 18th, 1777 as a 1st Lieutenant in Captain James Moore’s 1st regiment commanded by Colonel Chambers of the Pennsylvania line. That he continued to serve in the service of the United States until the 18th July, 1780, when he was discharged from service in Philadelphia, state of Pennsylvania, by General Wayne. That he was in the Battles of Germantown, Monmouth, Brandywine, Long Island, and storming of Stony Point…” Henry County, District of Kentucky: September 6th, 1820, John Blackburn, aged 68 years: “I served as sergeant major in the year 1776 in the company commanded by Captain James Moore in the 1st Pennsylvania Regiment commanded by Colonel Chambers in the Pennsylvania line. In 1777, I was commissioned 1st Lieutenant in the company, line and regiment aforesaid and served until the spring of the year 1780, agreeably to a former declaration dated 12th of August, 1818 and Pension certificate No. 11,115…” “I am a hatter by trade, but unable to pursue it, and with myself, I have three in the family, my wife Mary Blackburn, aged 70 and unable to work, and Rebecca Blackburn, a daughter, aged 30, subject to fits and not able to support herself.” “Morgan County, Indiana, July 13th, 1853, Elizabeth Blackburn, aged 76 years: “That she is the widow of John Blackburn, who was a Revolutionary pensioner of the United States at the time of his death. That he resided in Shelby County, Kentucky for several prior to and up to the time of his death… She further declares that she was married to the said John Blackburn on the 8th day of September, 1827, that her husband, the said John Blackburn, died on or about the 13th day of January, 1837.” Her maiden name was Henderson. Their parents and children’s names not given, but the daughter named above. She died January 12, 1858. At her death, her children were residing in Indiana, Illinois, Missouri and Iowa.
