Chenault et al, No. 371.688 On this 13 day of November, 1906 at Welden, County of Meade, State of Kentucky before me, A. B. Tarwater a special examiner of the Bureau of Pensions, personally appeared Calloway Brown, who being by me first duly sworn to answer truly all interrogations propounded to him during this special examination of aforesaid claim for pension, deposes and says: I am 50 years of age; my post office address is Welden, Meade Co, KY, Occupation, Farmer. I am an applicant for pension as the child of Campbell Brown, who served in the 27, KY Inf. I do not remember what Company. I do not remember when he was enlisted or discharged but he was in the Army during the time of the Civil War. I do not think he ever rendered any U. S. Military or Naval Service except as above stated. I haven’t his discharge certificate. My father was born in VA, but I do not know when. He had black hair and eyes, and fair complexion. I don’t know his height, but I suppose he was about 5 ft 8 or 9 inches. He was a farmer by occupation. My father was first married to Nancy Horsley, who was my mother. I can’t give the date of her death. We did have a family Bible containing our family record, but it got destroyed. I was a very small child when my mother died, and can just remember her. I do not remember the fact of her death, but there is no question but that she is dead. She died about 2 miles from what is now Garfield, KY near Lost Run Church. Her death occurred just before the Civil War commenced. The only persons I can name who attended my mother’s funeral are Green Horsley and Robert Stinnet Yelvington(?) Daviess Co., KY. I can’t name any other persons who would know of her death. My father next married Laura Whitworth in Brickenridge Co, Ky. She died within about a mile of where my mother died. She died about the close of the Civil War. I saw her dead body. She only lived a short time after she married my father. Burrell Whitworth, her brother, died about last Jan. I cannot give the name of anyone who was present when Laura Brown died, or who attended her funeral or saw her dead body or who would know of her death. Father next married Martha Adkisson. My father lived in the neighborhood of Garfield, Ky from the time he came out of the Army until he died, and is buried at Garfield. The graves of my father, and his wives Nancy and Laura, are not marked. I do not remember the date of my father’s death. No sir, I do not remember what year it was. He only lived a few years after he came out of the Army. I recon something near 3 or 4 years. I lived at my father’s house and was with him from the time he came out of the Army up until he died. I was present when he died. I remember dis- tinctly that when my father came back from the Army, he had lung trouble, and continued to suffer with it until it caused his death. He had a cough all the time after he was discharged from the Army. I don’t remember much about the manner in which death came on my father, only I know he died a mighty hard death. He choked to death. I have always understood that Consumption was the cause of his death. He had a severe cough when he died. I know that, and I have always been told Consumption was the cause of his death. He took a severe cold in the Army which settled on his lungs. I do not know whether he had the measles or not during his Army service. To the best of my recollection my father was bad sick with a cough for about a year before he died, and was not able to do anything for six months before he died. Thomas Northern waited on my father a good deal during his last illness but he is dead. Most of our near neighbors and people who waited on my father and visited him during his illness are dead. Robert Stinnett and his wife were present when my father died, and visited him during his last illness. James Graham who lives now, or did, at Tulsa, I. T. was with my father a great deal during his last illness. James Pool, who lives near Garfield, Ky was also with my father during his last illness. The men mentioned knew my father well from the time he came back from the Army until he died. My step- mother Martha died about 19 or 20 years ago. I was present when she died. My father was never married but three times, and had no wives but those mentioned. My father and his first wife Nancy had five children. They were James, Frazier, Milton, myself and Georgia. The last named is dead. Father had no children by his second wife Laura, and only one by his third wife Martha. The child’s name by Martha is Amanda Alice. She married Owen Chenault. I cannot give the dates of birth of any of my full brothers and sisters. I do not remember the date of birth of Amanda Alice, but I know she was born in Feby before my father died the next Jan. My father only left three children by his last or any previous marriage who were under 16 years of age when he died. Namely myself, Georgia and Amanda A. Georgia is dead now. Q: What date have you been taught was the day of your birth? Ans: I can’t hardly tell. I have always understood my birthday to be April 16 and I was 50 years old last April. I have no record of the date of my birth. I do not know of any person or anyway I can prove the date of my birth. I have always been informed that Dr. Warfield attended at my birth. He is dead. I do not know how and cannot explain the discrepancies in Dr. Warfield’s statement as to my age. My brothers James and Milton live near Garfield, Ky. My brother Frazier is in the Insane Asylum. I do not desire to be present in person or to be represented by attorney during the special examination of my claim. I believe my attorney is Milo B. Stevens & Co. Washington, D.C. I have made no contract about the payment of a fee that I remember. I have not paid my attorneys or any one else anything for their services in the prosecution of my pension claim. I have heard the foregoing read. Have under- stood the questions asked me and my answers are correctly recorded. Witnesses “X” O. Chenault Calloway his X mark Brown Seariel? E.
