"Youth Drowns At Barren River Beach. "A 14-year old Glasgow youth, Jonathan Wayne Childress, drowned at Barren River Beach Tuesday afternoon [July 31], and became the first drowning victim at the State Park Beach area since it opened three years ago. "Life Guard Supervisor, Bruce Layne, said today that the boy was a swimmer and had been seen by the guards in the contained pool area swimming with some frience.When Childress submerged and failed to come to top to his friends notified a life guard and the body was found about five minutes later by guard Scott Gross in eight feet of water outside the roped off area. The victim did not yell for help according to reports he was just suddenly missed by his swimming buddies. "The body was placed on a large surf board and life guards Bernard Williams and Jimmy Tucker administered mouth to mouth resuscitation as the body was brought to the shore. On the beach oxygen was administered to the victim from a Scottsville ambulance who was at the scene and a great deal of water was reportedly pressed from the lungs. The youth was brought to Samson Community Hospital by ambulance and was pronounced dead on arrival. The drowing occurred around 3:45 p.m. "Childress was the son of Jim Childress and Mrs. Alene Curd, both of Glasgow. He resided at 302 College Street. "In addition to his parents he is survived by a grandmother, Mrs. Anna Pearl Sublett, Glasgow, seven sisters and eight brothers. "Funeral services will be held at 1 pm Saturday at Hopewell Baptist Church with burial in the Barlow Cemetery. The body is at Watts Funeral Home."
