Ambrose Craig letter, 1845 - Morgan Co This transcribtion of an original letter in the possesion of Harold CRAIG of Sutter Creek, CA. It is from his grandfather written to his [Harolds], grandfather's mother Savilla CRAIG , addressed Cato P.O Marion Co, Illinois. [spelling is left as original] Hazle Green Morgan Cty, Ky. June 23rd 1845 My Dear Mother It is with pleasure that I accept of the present opportunity of writing you a few lines in which I will say to you that we are all well at this time and are all living together on the Dry ridge. Wishing this short epistle may reach you and family and all the relations enjoying reasonable portion of health. It is my painful duty to inform you of the death of Brother John's wife. She died on Friday last of the 20th of June after a very short illness. She was taken on Thursday morning after breakfast with I suppose an inflamation of the stomach and died the next day at 2 o clock. She left six children as follows, to wit Emily, Almanzer, Absalom, Ambrose, Gilly Ann and Lydia. the youngest being only five weeks old the day its mother died. I have four children whose names are Savilla, John, William, Fleming and all of them appears to be very smart pretty and healthy children. Times remain tolerably hard but not so hard as they have formerly been. property of every description is bearing a better price than for some time past. hogs is worth $2.25 to $2.50 per cwt.,beef $2.50 to $3.00, corn 40 to 50 cts per bushel, Bacon 8 to 10 cts per lb, and everything else in proportion. Absalom lives in Harrison County & I do not know how he is doing the last time I heard from him he was very sick. John & myself & families will still live together so long as we remain in this County. & we have no notion of moving from here as it was Minervas request that John should remain where he is as long as he lives. I want you to be sure to write to us as quick as this comes to hand and let us know how you are all doing & also give us all news. So nothing more But remain your dutiful Son till death AMBROSE CRAIG From: Mbap1029@aol.com Date: Sat, 23 Aug 1997 Ambrose Craig letter, 1845 - Morgan Co
