This is taken from the Sturgis News around 1993-95 and I've added a few of my own notes to it too. Mike DeMoss, named by the Sturgis Kiwanis Club as Citizen of the Year.. DeMoss, who spent 10 years as a Sturgis Policeman, was honored for his work with the youth through the DARE and other anti-drug programs. The 45 year old DeMoss is also a the minister at the Bethany Baptist Church and works full time at C&C Ford in Sturgis. His ten year career with the Sturgis Police Department ended about 2 months ago. He is a Vietnam War Veteran and he and his wife, Sharon, have been married for 23 years. They couple have one married daughter, Kristie DeMoss Slaton of Sturgis. He is a former coal miner, and also operated Mike's Lawn and Garden in Sturgis before joining the police force here in 1984. The award was presented by Garland Certain who served on the Citizen of the Year committee with John Arnold and Doby Waggener. Certain noted that DeMoss was a long time member of the Union County Drug Council and became the local Drug Enforcement Officer. DeMoss has given countless drug talks to adults and children alike. He stresses the dangers of drugs in those talks and advises on what parents should look for if they fear their children are involved with drugs. Certain said DeMoss's most enjoyable experiences as a police officer came when he taught the DARE classes for six years as Sturgis Elementary. "That was the highlight of his career. At the first graduation of the DARE class, if kids could elect a president, DeMoss would have been elected. After accepting his plaque, an emotional DeMoss said he will continue to work with kids until the Good Lord takes me away." Mike was born in Madisonville, KY, July 6, 1949 to Clarence Joyce DeMoss Jr. and Sarah Ellen Eldridge DeMoss. Around 1956, the family moved to Union County, Sturgis, Ky. July 30, 1971, he married Sharon Gayle Back . Their daughter Kristie Michelle was born in 1974. In 1993, the added a son in law, John Pratt Slaton, to the family, and in 1996, they added Dalton Slaton as their first grandson. Submitted by: Maria & Tim Troutman Date: 13 May 1997
