After high school she completed the one year training as an Xray and laboratory technician in Louisville KY, and joined the staff at T J Samson Community Hospital when it opened in 1929. She and Glasgow attorney George J Ellis Jr were married on Halloween, 1933. When her mother-in-law died, Frances and George Jr moved into her father-in-law's home and she left work to care for George J. (Jay) Ellis III, born in 1937, and Martha Mitchell Ellis, born in 1941. Their daughter Martha died at the age of 16 due to severe cerebral palsy.
