LEWIS of Irvington, Ky (Breckinridge County), attended the funeral of Capt. A. S. ENGLISH on Friday, February 5, 1904. Page 6, Column 3 same issue: WAS A BAPTIST FOR 62 YEARS Capt. A. S. ENGLISH, an aged and well-known citizen, died at his home in this city (Cloverport, Ky) last Thursday, February 4, 1904 at 6:40 a.m. of general debility. His health had been failing for some time, but he was bedfast only 3 days before his death, which was peaceful and without much suffering. Capt. ENGLISH was born January 3, 1822 in Hardin County, Ky near Elizabethtown. His earlier life was spent in Hardin County, after which he came to Webster in Breckinridge County, where he owned a large farm for many years. He was twice married, and his children were born and reared at Webster. His first wife was Miss Martha CHICK of Bewleyville, Ky (Breckinridge County). In 1866 he married a Miss WILLIAMS of Tennessee, who survives. About 14 years ago, Capt. ENGLISH came to this city with his family. He served during the Civil War in General FORREST'S Confederate Cavalry. He had command of a Company in the 3rd KY Regiment and saw active service throughout the contest. He was a member of the Baptist Church for 62 years, and lived a life consistent with his faith. The "Western Reporter" (Newspaper) stated last year, he was the oldest living Baptist in the state. A widow and the following children survive: Mrs. Ella LaNEAVE of Franklin, Tennessee (Williamson County) Edward ENGLISH of the Philippines Island Smith ENGLISH of Louisiana Frank ENGLISH of this city (Cloverport, Ky) The Reverend H. S. ENGLISH of Stephensport, Ky (Breckinridge County), is a nephew. The funeral was held in the Baptist Church Friday afternoon, February 5, 1904. The Pastor, Reverend S. O. CHRISTIAN, officiating. English in the Breckinridge County Cemetery Book, volume 1, published in 1991.
