He moved from there to Loudon County, Virginia, thence to Prince William County, Virginia, and while residing there he enlisted in August 1779 and served six weeks as private in Capt. Hugh Brent’s (Britt) company, Col. Garrard’s Virginia Regiment. He enlisted October 1, 1780 and served five months as private in Captain John Brett’s company, Colonels Williams’ and Lucas’ Virginia regiments. In 1800 he moved from Prince William County, Virginia, and resided in Mason County and Montgomery County, Kentucky. He was allowed pension on his application executed October 2, 1832, while a resident of Montgomery County, KY. In 1834 he was living near Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois. There are no data concerning his family. (Note from transcriber: there is a Nathaniel H. Foster age 30-40 living in Sangamon IL in the 1840 US Fed. Census – p. 23 of 132 on ancestry.com— could be his son) In order to obtain the date of last payment of pension of Nathaniel Foster S. 32253, it is suggested that you address the Comptroller General, Records Div., General Accounting Office. Signed, E. W. Morgan, Acting Commissioner” On 1 Oct 1780 he enlisted as a substitute under Capt. John Brett and Lt. William Farrow. Cuthbert Payton was Ensign. He was at Choppawamsick, NC and marched to St. Petersburg and was in the Chaurau Hills in No. Carolina. They captured a number of Tory prisoners and delivered them to Gen. Greene’s HQ. He served under Capt. Gerrard (later Gov. of Kentucky) and marched to Hunters Ironworks in Fairfax County to “guard the inhabitants from the ravages of the British,” who were in the Bay at the Mouth of Framouth (?). Moved to Mason, KY in 1800 and then to Montgomery Co., KY. A letter written to the War Dept. from Robert Douglas Loose stated that Nathaniel and his wife were buried in Princeton, IN. He stated that he was the grandson of Ann Foster who married Washington Iles, and that Ann Foster was the daughter of Nathaniel Foster. Nathaniel wrote a letter to the War Dept. on Nov. 1, 1834 requesting a transfer of his pension to Springfield, Sangamon, Illinois, and stating that he had moved from KY to IL. William Jameson testified 2 Oct 1832 in Montgomery Co. KY, that he knew that Nathaniel had entered the service at the time of the Battle of Cowpens The War Department received a letter from Robert Douglas Loose, the grandson of Ann Foster, who married Washington Iles. VA, Prince William Co., VA, Mason Co., KY and Montgomery Co., KY is often confused with another Nathaniel Foster who also fought in the Revolution and was also born in New Jersey. However this second Nathaniel lived in Bourbon Co., KY and died in Adams Co., Ohio. It is yet unknown if they were related.
