Subject: [KYF] OBIT: Lew Franklin, Metcalfe Co. Sent: Monday, October 13, 2003 6:57 PM Submitted by Sandi Gorin NOTE: I have no connection, no further information and am not seeking additional information. "Prominent Metcalfe Man Dies At Advanced Age. "One of Metcalfe county's most picturesque characters was removed Monday night by the death of Lew Franklin, at his home between Beaumont and Lone Star. Mr. Franklin was 92 years of age, and was preceded to the grave by his wife whom it will be recalled, died about a year ago. Burial was conducted at the family graveyard Tuesday afternoon. "Unique among Mr. Franklin's eccentricities was the fact that he was born, raised and died in the same house, often recounting to his friends that he had never spent one night from under its roof. His friends recall that in commenting on his marriage he stated that he courted his wife for 30 years before his marriage, calling on her one day each year, at Christmas time. "He and his wife gained considerable publicity in 1928, when they were brought to Glasgow by Esq. J. T. Froedge, a neighbor, forther first, and only, glimpse of a railroad train. This story was published in many prominent magazines and papers. He often recounted stories about having killed deer and panthers in his younger days back in his native section. "He was a life-long Republican and it is believed that he never missed an election until his latter years. Other than to leave home to vote, his other infrequent journeys took him to the mill. "No immediate relatives survive." Unknown Glasgow KY newspaper, found in the files of the late Eva Coe Peden.
