Funk November 22, 1838 - unknown Washington County KyArchives Biography Author: Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, Volume 5 MADISON B. FUNK was born November 22, 1838. His parents, John W. and Harriet (Bosley) Funk, has a family of five boys and three girls; James F., Sarah E., John H., Martha W., Madison B., Joseph, Charles P. and Harriet M; of the five boys, Madison B. Is the only surviving one, the rest, by a curious coincidence, have all died accidental deaths, except one, James F., who died of pneumonia. William Funk, paternal grandfather, as of German descent, and on the farm now owned by Thomas Cregor in Washington County, on which he continued to reside until his death. He became, for his day, an extensive farmer and slave owner. Gideon Bosley as his maternal grandfather. (See sketch of C. F. Bosley). John W. Funk was born at the Funk homestead July 14, 1795; he grew to manhood there and was early inured to the hardships which attended farm life in those days. His marriage to Miss Bosley occurred March 16, 1826. Anterior to the year 1838 he was engaged in various pursuits, among which were teaming, milling and farming; in that year he purchased a tract of land and thenceforward gave his undivided attention to farming until his death. Madison B. Funk was born in Washington County, and continued a resident of the homestead until the year 1872. September 21, 1871, he as united in marriage to Miss Willie A. Sharpe, by whom he is the father of five children: William H., Emma L. And Enna (twins, Enna dying in infancy), Hattie B. And Jane B., who were born respectively as following: July 2, 1872, June 28, 1875, October 9, 1877, and May 12, 1884. Anterior to the year 1878 Mr. Funk was engaged in farming and milling; at that time he disposed of his landed interests and embarked in milling exclusively, which he continued until 1884, when he purchased a farm, his ill health not permitting him to remain in the milling business longer. From a business point of view Mr. Funk has been successful; he is the owner of 350 acres of land, 250 in Washington County, on which he lives, and 100 in Marion County. He and wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He belongs to the K. of H. Fraternity, and votes with the Democratic party.
