GADDIE was born May 25, 1842, and is the first in a family of seven sons and four daughters, all yet living, born to Bartholomew S. and Sarah A (Handley) Gaddie. Bartholomew S. Gaddie, a native of Green, now Taylor County, was born December 15, 1803; he was a farmer and slave-holder, and a lover of and trader in horses; with his wife he is still living and is still a very active man. His father, Benjamin Gaddie, a Virginian of English descent, married Susan Crues; he came to Hart County, Ky., as early as 1790, but afterward moved to Green County, where he engaged in farming. Mrs. Sarah A. Gaddie was born in Marion County, a daughter of William and Jane (McColgan) Handley, natives respectively of Marion and Green Counties. John T. Gaddie, a native of Green, now Taylor County, was reared a farmer, received a good common and high school education, and in the fall of 1862 enlisted in the Forty-eighth Tennessee Infantry, but was discharged soon after, on account of ill health. March 7, 1867, he married Miss Cris A. Stiles, of Nelson County, and daughter of Charles and Ann (Willett) Stiles, natives respectively of New Jersey and Kentucky. To Mr. and Mrs. Gaddie have been born eight children: Charles B., Robert D., John L., Lewis F., Joseph H., Ira C. And George T. After marriage Mr. Gaddie settled on his present farm of 130 acres at New Haven, Nelson County; he also owns 140 acres of timber land in LaRue County. He is a member of the F.&A.M., and, with his wife, of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. In politics he is a Democrat, and cast his first presidential vote for Seymour.
