GREEN was born October 30, 1841, in Madison County, and is a son of Irvine T. and Nancy (Phelps) Green, of Madison County. Irvine T. Green was born in 1812 in Madison County. He was a son of James Green, who was also born in Madison County; married Mary Taylor, of Washington County, reared a family of seven sons and five daughters, was a substantial farmer three miles west of Richmond, and died in 1867, aged eighty-one years. His father, William Green, came from South Carolina and located west of Richmond as early as 1785, being one of the earliest pioneers. Nancy (Phelps) Green was a daughter of Philip Phelps, a farmer of the county, a son of John Phelps, an early pioneer who was killed by the Indians. F. M. Green, the first of two sons, received his education in the Kentucky University, from which he graduated in 1862. He also graduated in the Harvard Law School in 1864. In 1864 he entered a law office in Richmond, and read and practiced his profession until 1871, when he, with Judge W. C. Miller purchased the Kentucky Register, became the editor, and in 1872, became the sole proprietor and editor. The paper was established in 1866, by B. H. Brown. Mr. Green has made this one of the best papers in Kentucky, with a circulation of 1,200. The Kentucky Register is Democratic, modern and progressive, conscientious, liberal and fair in advocating its principles, always with the people for justice and right, and opposed to extreme measures.
