JOHN A. GREEN, a native of Indiana, was born in Dubois County, January 1,
1843, and is one of eight children born to Lewis and Sarah (Ritchie) Green,
who were natives of Kentucky.  Lewis came to this State in his youth and
follow- ed farming as an occupation.  In 1832 he married and afterward bought
280 acres of land in Madison Township, Dubois County, where he lived thirty-
two years.  He afterward sold out and purchased 280 acres in a different part
of the same township.  His death occurred May 11, 1880.  The mother is of
Scotch-Irish descent, and a daughter of a Methodist minister.  She came to
Indiana from the Blue Grass State, when there were only a few white people in
the county.  She is now an agile, bright old lady of seventy-seven years. John
A. was raised and educated in his native county, the first twenty-one years of
his life being passed in aiding his parents on the home farm. Being a strong
Union man, he enlisted in Company M, Tenth Indiana Calvary, February 7, 1864.
Shortly after, when out on duty, he was captured at Hollow Tree Gap, Tenn.,
and taken to Andersonville, where he was held for four months, when he was
paroled and delivered up at Vicksburg and came home on furlough and did not
enter the field again as hostilities had ceased.  September 21, 1865, he
married Elfa Banta who was born October 6, 1847, in Washington County, Ind.
They have five children:  Grace, Culvin, Neanian, Lewis and Roscoe. After his
marriage he settled on the old homestead, where he now lives. He is a well to
do farmer and owns 320 acres of land.  He is a Republican, casting his first
vote for U.S. Grant.  He and wife are members of the Presbyterian Church.
