GREENE, editor and proprietor of the Washington County Leader, was born in Washington County, February 22, 1859, and is the second son of Charles and Julia (McIntire) Greene, both parents natives of Kentucky. Frank Greene, subject's grandfather, was a native of Ireland. He came to the United States many years ago and settled at Louisville, where he engaged in the cabinet-making business, which he carried on until his death, a number of years before subject's birth. He was a skillful workman, and did a thriving business for many years. Charles Greene was born in Bardstown, Ky., in 18232, and is still living, his present home being Springfield. He is an architect and builder, and came to Springfield about the year 1855. Subject's maternal grandfather, John McIntire, was born in Washington County, Ky., and is a son of Thomas McIntire, who came from Maryland with the earliest pioneer settlers of central Kentucky. John McIntire is still living in his native county, and is a man of considerable local prominence, having served as county court judge for a period of twelve years. Julia Greene, wife of Charles Greene, was born in Washington County, and died in 1859. She was the mother of but two children, named, John and G. W. Greene, both of whom reside in Springfield. G. W. Greene was reared in Louisville, and was educated in the public schools of the city and Cecilian College, the latter of which he attended two years. At the age of sixteen he entered the publishing house of John P. Morton to learn the printer's trade, and remained with him two and one-half years, at the end of which time he entered the Courier-Journal office, where he remained one year. Mr. Greene has traveled extensively over the South and West, and has worked on a number of the leading papers in Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri and Ohio, among which may be mentioned the Chicago Inter-Ocean, Cincinnati Enquirer, Commercial-Gazette, Globe-Democrat, Nashville American, Memphis Appeal and Avalanche, and others. He came to Springfield in 1884, and engaged as compositor on the Washington Leader, and on May 14 of the following year became editor and proprietor. The Leader is a flourishing local sheet, Democratic in politics, has a circulation of 800, and under Mr. Greene's management has become quite successful. Mr. Greene was married November 11, 1885, to Miss Annie Shader, daughter of J. A. and Emma (McAhan) Shader, of Springfield. Mr. And Mrs. Greene are members of the Catholic Church.
