Greer October 5, 1825 - Nelson County KyArchives Biography Author: Genealogy and Biography Volume V, Battle-Perrin-Kniffin, 3rd ed. 1886 THOMAS N. GREER, the next eldest child of James and Elizabeth (Milton) Greer, as born October 5, 1825, in Nelson County. Samuel Greer, his paternal grandfather, was a native of Ireland, and there grew to manhood. When he came to the United States he first located in Pennsylvania, where he lived for a number of years, and where his marriage to Miss Rebecca Howard occurred. In 1783 he came to Kentucky, passing through Pittsburgh and down the Ohio River to the falls, where he landed, and after a short stop proceeded to the interior and settled in Nelson County of which he continued a resident until his death, which occurred about 1819, at an advanced age. Richard Milton, subject's maternal grandfather, was a native of the "Old Dominion," and came to Kentucky when a youth, locating in Nelson County, and remaining a resident until a few years anterior to his death, when he removed to Shelby County, near Mount Eden, where he died at the age of seventy-nine years, in 1851. James Greer, father of Thomas N., was born September 7, 1797. In 1822 he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Milton, by whom he became the father of the following-named children: Milton, Thomas N., Sarah (deceased), Harriet H. (deceased), William b., Samuel H., Cornelia A., Richard J. and Elizabeth (deceased). His vocation was farming and assisted his parents on the farm until he attained the age of twenty-six years. March 1, 1855, he married Miss Sarah L. foster, and to their union eight children have been born, of whom six are now living: James F., who married Virginia Lee; Ann D., Harriet H. (wife of Hezekiah Wigington), NBertha, Walter and Margaret F. In his vocation of farming Mr. Greer has been highly successful and owns about 500 acres of well improved land. He and wife and three children are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, and one of the children is a member of the Baptist Church. In politics he has always been a Democrat.
