HAMLTON as born April 20, 1843, and is the second of five sons and seven daughters, all of whom were reared, born to Benjamin A. and Ann Margaret (Mayes) Hamilton, natives of Virginia. Benj. A. Hamilton immigrated to Green County with his parents about 1821 and settled on Pitman Creek, and became an extensive farmer and a large land-holder. He was a son of Leonard and Martha (Chaudoin) Hamilton. Leonard was a carpenter and farmer, a patriot and soldier of 1812, settled on Pitman Creek in 1821, was of Scotch-Irish origin. Mrs. Ann M. Hamilton was a daughter of James Mayes, who was of English descent, born in Virginia, and settled in Green County about 1810. James L. Hamilton, born in Taylor County, was reared on a farm until seventeen years old, and received a common English education. In October, 1861, he enlisted in Company E, Thirteenth Kentucky Volunteers, and was in all the engagements in which his regiment took par. His first battle as Shiloh. He was discharged with his regiment January, 1865, and after his return home resumed farm life till 1878, when he made the race for jailer; was elected and still holds that office. He has been a resident of Green County since a child of one year. January 28, 1869, he was united in marriage to Nancy E. Hagan, a daughter of H. T. and Mary Jane (Smith) Hagan, natives of Brownstown, Ind., and Virginia, respectively. Mr. Hagan in his early day was a wool carder; when yet a young man he settled in Green County, Ky., and during and since the war has been a merchant at Rolling Ridge, Green County; was of Irish descent. Mary Jane (Smith) Hagan is a daughter of John Smith, who was a farmer and early settler in Taylor County. Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton have had born to them two children: Lela G. and Ulysses Grant. He is now an active Republican, but cast his first vote for Geo. B. McClellan.
