HAMMAN; TRIBUTES PAID BY THE CITY -- Cloverport suffered the loss of one of its oldest and most highly respected citizens last Thursday, October 27, 1904, in the death of M. HAMMAN. He entered the furniture and undertaking business in this city in 1860, and had been actively engaged in business at the time of his death, for a longer period than any other citizen. On October 18, Mr. HAMMAN received a stroke of paralysis, the entire right side being affected. This resulted in his death at 9:15 a.m. last Thursday. Previous to Oct 18, he was ill two weeks with bronchial pneumonia. His condition was critical during the latter part of his illness, and death was expected at any time. Michael HAMMAN was born in Alsace, Germany on November 10, 1835. In 1853, he came to America and settled at Cannelton, Indiana (Perry County), where he worked at his trade of cabinet maker. Seven years later he came to this city, where he went into the furniture and undertaking business, and continued at his trade. The firm was styled M. HAMMAN until January 1, 1896, when Charles W. HAMMAN associated himself with his father, and the name was changed to M. HAMMAN & Son. Mr. C. W. HAMMAN will continue to conduct the business under the old firm's name at the present. Before the fire of March 13, 1901, the firm of M. HAMMAN & Son occupied a 3-story brick building and had an extensive stock. They sustained a heavy loss by the fire, with no insurance, but re-built, and soon re-established their trade. The firm has been one of the most successful in the city. Mr. HAMMAN was married on December 6, 1860 to Miss Christina DHONAU, at Rome, Indiana (Perry County). Mrs. HAMMAN and the following children, who were at his bedside when the end came, are those who survive: Mrs. Ed WHITEHEAD of this city Mrs. J. I. MAY of this city Miss Lena HAMMAN of this city C. W. HAMMAN of this city Harry HAMMAN of this city Mrs. Charles BOUFFIER of Gallatin, Tennessee (Sumner County) Wilber HAMMAN of Little Rock, Arkansas (Pulaski County) Reared in the teachings of the Lutheran Church, Mr. HAMMAN was a man of strong faith and convictions. In 1861, he left his church, and with Mrs. HAMMAN, he united with the Presbyterian Church of this city, as a member of which,he was one of its strongest members, and will be missed as such. Mr. HAMMAN was not a member of any fraternal origination, nor was he ever a public officer, but if he had been, he could not have had more friends. Men liked him for his exemplary traits of character, for fair dealing in his business transactions, his devotion to his daily duties, qualities that appealed to all who knew him. On Friday, October 28, 1904, the day of the funeral of the deceased, the business houses of the city, the Post Office, the Public School, and the Rail Road Shops were closed part of the afternoon, and a large concourse of citizens attended the funeral.
