His father, Jacob Harlan, was born May 1, 1818, five miles southeast of Danville, where he was reared. In 1843 he removed to Buchanan County, Mo., and in 1847 returned to Boyle County, Ky. In 1853 he purchased Crab Orchard Springs, and in 1855 he purchased the ancestral homestead where he now resides, consisting of 250 acres of productive land in a good state of cultivation. He as an old line Whig, a Union man, and lost sixteen slaves by the late war. In religion he is a reformer. He is the son of Henry Harlan, born in 1790 four miles east of Danville, who furnished a substitute in the war of 1812, was a farmer and slave-holder, a Whig, a Christian, and died in 1855. He was the son of George Harlan, a native of North Carolina, who traded a negro woman for 800 acres of good land, where he settled in (now) Boyle County, Ky., was a pioneer, a Christian, and died in 1836. He married Catharine Pope, and their offspring were Jacob, Henry, George, Jeremiah (who was lost sight of), James, Joseph, Benjamin, John, Mary (Fleece), and Susan (McGee). Henry married Nancy T. (Thomas) Bryan, of Boyle County (born in 1800, died in 1840), and the result of their union were Catherine (Carter), Jacob, Robert, George, James P., William B., Jeremiah, Mary (Bentley and Neal), John, Martha (Simpson), Henry, Pauline (Armstrong), and Elizabeth (Streit). Jacob Harlan first married in 1842, Miss Atlanta B., daughter of John and Clarissa (Black) Harlan, of Salt River, Boyle County, (born in 1823, died October 8, 1856), and from their union sprang Mary G. (Bruce), Clarissa (Dunn), Maria I. (Baughman), and J. W. In 1857 he married Mrs. Louisa T. Roberts, daughter of James Center, of Lincoln County (born in 1825), and they have been favored with one daughter, Susie Lee, and a son, George Wellington Harlan. Mrs. Atlanta B. Harlan as a daughter of Jehu, the son of James Harlan, of Harlan Station. George, Sr., and James were cousins of Maj. Silas Harlan, who was slain at the battle of Blue Lick. J. W. Harlan is a farmer, having 300 acres of well-improved land, and is a Baptist and a Democrat.
