Submitted by Mary Hudson Middlesboro Daily News, Middlesboro, KY Feb. 9, 1921 Shot Dead Walking Along County Road Henry Hix, Of Kingsport, is Killed By Henry Bass While Under The Influence Of Liquor Big Stone Gap, Feb. 9 -- Sunday afternoon about three o'clock, Henry Hix whose home is in Kingsport, Tenn., was shot and killed by Henry Bass of this place. The shooting occurred between Big Stone Gap and Appalachia while Hix was walking along by the side of the road. Bass, in company with a woman named Belle Benson, was in an automobile, and under the influence of liquor. As the car passed Hix, Bass pulled out a 32 special revolver and took several shots seemingly not looking where he was shooting. A ball struck Hix above the heart and death came instantly. The body of the dead man was sent to the undertaking establishment and will likely be returned to Kingsport for burial. Bass was arrested and lodged in jail to await a preliminary hearing. In the confusion the woman was allowed to escape but was taken later in the evening in the Norton Coal Camps and turned over to Sheriff Corder who took her back to Big Stone Gap, where she will have a hearing along with Bass. The party who sold the liquor to Bass was found to be Ham Tate, of Powell Valley. He was arrested and tried and fined $300 and given six months in jail. ______________________________
