Subject: Hord.Paul.Whitfield.1965.Taylor.OBIT Paul Whitfield Hord November 18 1965 Taylor County KyArchives Obituaries The News-Journal, November 25, 1965 Admiral Paul Whitfield Hord, (retired), 64, passed away at the San Diego Naval Hospital, San Diego, California on Nov. 18. His funeral was held at Bonham Brothers Mortuary, San Diego Monday, Nov. 22 at 10:30 a.m. Pacific Time, with graveside services at 11:30. He was buried at Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery, San Diego. He was the son of the late George Whitfield and Nellie Hiestand Hord, and was a nephew of the late Dr. C. V. Hiestand, of Campbellsville. Admiral Hord was a native of Taylor County. He was born on Dec. 15, 1900, on a farm on the Smiths Ridge Road. He later moved to South Campbellsville with his family when a boy. Here he lived for most of the time until he was appointed to the U. S. Naval Academy at Annapolis. After graduating from there, he was occupied with his duties as an officer in the U. S. Navy, receiving promotion after promotion. He was at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked there. He served on many arduous tasks and assignments of which the one probably the most extremely grueling was that of Commander of the Fleet in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He won many citations and awards for bravery in action and deeds performed. He was up for retirement when World War II came but he stayed on to fight for our country. He finally retired and spent the major portion of the time in California which is his wife's native state. Surviving are his wife and five sisters, Mrs. Charles B. Steger, Sharon, Penn., Mrs. E. P. Peterson, Mrs. Robert Bailey and Mrs. David Mitchell, all of Campbellsville, and Mrs. Muriel Lippincott of Burkesville, also a niece, Mrs. Robert Wise, lives here besides many other relatives.
