He is a son of William K. And Harriet (Miller) Hubbard, to whom five sons and four daughters were born, all of whom lived to be grown, and of whom Jacob is the fourth. William K. Hubbard was born in 1808, in Nelson County. In his early days he followed boating and teaming, and was also a surveyor and farmer. About 1825 he settled twelve miles north of Hodgensville. He was a son of Thomas Hubbard, who was born in Virginia, but who settled in Nelson County, Ky., about 1800, where he was first engaged as a merchant, later was a farmer, slave holder and trader on the river. Mrs. Harriet Hubbard was a native of Nelson County, a daughter of Jacob Miller, who was of German descent, and married a Miss Hill; they were both from Pennsylvania, and settled in Nelson County about 1795, where Mr. Miller engaged in hotel business and farming. He was a soldier of 1812; was in the battle of New Orleans with a son, John Miller. Jacob Hubbard was reared on a farm, and at the age of twenty-one he commenced life on his own account at farming at $10 per month for three months, after which he went to Louisville, and engaged as a salesman in a wholesale grocery for two years, after which he returned to Hodgensville, and engaged in the grocery business for six years, when he again returned to Louisville, and engaged in the wholesale grocery business two and one half years. He then returned to Hodgensville and located where he now resides, immediately north of the village on a farm. Mr. Hubbard was married, September 6i, 1860, to Laura Elliott, of La Rue County, a daughter of Edmond and Eliza (Peak) Elliott. Mrs. Hubbard died September 16, 1860, a member of the Baptist Church. October 27, 1863, Mr. Hubbard married Mary M. Rodman, a daughter of Dr. J. H. And Catherine (Murray) Rodman. Seven children bless this union: Murry R., Miller (died at the age of eighteen months), Jessie R., J. Charley, William S., Mary M. and Bessie La Rue. Mr. and Mrs. Hubbard are members of the Baptist and Presbyterian Churches, respectively. Mr. Hubbard is a Democrat in politics but case his first presidential vote for Fillmore.
