Laura, the wife, had went into town when the fatal shooting took place. A trial took place in which all charges against Hazel were dismissed and she was set free. 5 months after Benjamin was killed, his widow Laura married Harrison Bewley. Laura and both her husbands are buried at Big Spring UMC Cemetery, only Laura is buried next to her second husband. Benjamin is buried alone, his children buried in spots around the county. My grandmother, niece of Benjamin and Laura Knott Huffines, relates a different story that was rumored throughout the Knott family lines.
