M.D. HUGHES was born November 28, 1845, near Stanford, Lincoln Co., Ky., a son of Joseph N. and Amelia (Russell) Hughes, to whom six sons and three daughters were born, five of whom were raised, of which our subject is the fourth. J. N. Hughes was born in Lincoln County, Ky., and died January 6, 1869, aged fifty-four years. He was a leading farmer and trader; was a contractor for the Union Army, furnishing supplies. He had served as justice in his county; was a son of Gabriel Hughes, who was born in Culpeper County, Va., was one of the pioneers of Lincoln County, Ky., where he became a large and influential farmer. He served as a common soldier in the war of 1812. His father came from Wales. Amelia (Russell) Hughes was born and raised in Lincoln County, daughter of Frank Russell, a native of Lincoln County, Ky. The most of his family settled in Hendricks and Lawrence Counties, Ind. M. D. Hughes was raised on a farm and received an academic education, after which he taught school in Stanford and vicinity for eight years. He then engaged in farming ford a few years; in 18789 was appointed to a place in the revenue service, where he remained two years; in 1880 was an elector on the Hancock and Hendricks ticket; in 1876 was elected justice in Stanford and declined to serve; in 1883 established the Central Kentucky News, and succeeded in making one of the best county papers in the State, with a good circulation; September 30, 1886, sold the paper. February 9, 1869, he was united in marriage to Mattie, daughter of Robert and Polly (Salter) Elkin, natives of Shelby County. Robert Elkins moved to Garrard, thence to Lincoln; as a substantial farmer and a prominent officer in the Christian Church. He was a soldier in the war of 1812; was in the battle of Thames. He died of cancer in 1875; was of English descent. Mr. And Mrs. Hughes had born to them to bless their union three children: Robert Elkin, Frank Sanfley and May Z. He and wife are members of the Christian Church. He is a leading member of the I.O.O.F. and K of H. In politics he is a Democrat.
