James.Bertha.Smith.1947.Pike.OBIT BERTHA SMITH (JAMES) Mrs. Bertha James, 39, of McVeigh, died at 12:20 p.m. Sunday at her home of a lingering illness. She was the wife of Nelson James, employee of the Eastern Coal Corporation. Mrs. James was a daughter of Wayne and Hannah May Smith, of McVeigh, and a member of the Church of God. She was born January 28, 1908 at McVeigh. Besides her husband and parents, she is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Hazel Anderson, and three sons, Buddy, Ray (actually Roy), and Corbett James, all of McVeigh, Ky.;stepchildren, Mrs. Hobart Anderson of McVeigh and Mrs. Ray Harper of Detroit, Mich.; three brothers, Ernest, Onis and L.D. Smith of McVeigh; and five sisters, Mrs. James Holt and Mrs. Belle Mosley of McAndrews, Mrs. Buck Hall of Montevale, W.Va., Mrs. Jesse Hubbard and Miss Hatholine Smith of McVeigh. Funeral services were conducted from the home at 2 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. Burial followed in the Stump cemetery. Contributed by Glenna 22 May 1997
