To: Ky-Footsteps Subject: Jewell.John.F.1896.Barren.OBIT John F. Jewell August 2 1896 Barren County KyArchives Obituaries Glasgow (KY) Weekly Times, 5 Aug 1896 "Mr. J. F. F. Jewell, the well known merchant and citizen, passed away at his home on Barren river Sunday night last, after a long and painful illness. The news of his death will not come as a surprise to his many friends who have for months been keenly anxious as to his condition. Mr. Jewell was one of the foremost men and citizens of the county, and was a gentleman who will be greatly missed by all who knew him. The following sketch of his life is taken from the "History of Kentucky," and is only a modest testimonial of the worth of a true man who is now gone from among us: "John F. Jewell was born November 19, 1822, at Pageville, on Barren river, Barren county, where he was reared to manhood, and where he has all his life resided. His father, Capt. George D. Jewell, was born August 4th, 1797, near Lexington, Ky., where he was reared to manhood. In 1818, Capt. Jewell located in Barren county. Here he engaged for thirty years as a freighter on the river, and amassed a handsome estate, which was greatly impoverished by the war. Capt. Jewell was a huntsman of superior skill, and probably killed more deer than any other man in the county. He lost twenty-five slaves by the late war and died in 1876. Capt. Jewell was the son of Jonatrhan Jewell, Sr., a native of Virginia, who died in Barren county about 1840, at the age of ninety- four years. It is a singular fact that Mr. Jonathan Jewell, at the time of his death at ninety-four years of age, had every tooth in his mouth still in perfectly sound condition. J. F. F. Jewell, the subject of this sketch, was first married, February 8, 1853, to Eliza J., daughter of Anderson and Harriet Wooten. She died April 1, 1854, leaving one child, now Mrs. Eliza J. Boles. March 27, 1860, Mr. Jewell married Anna E., daughter of Dr. G. M. and Ermine Page, of Barren county. She died in 1874, leaving five children - Mrs. Cora Claypool, Mrs. Maud Doetter, Lee, Samuel and Willie Jewell. At the age of fourteen, Mr. J. F. F. Jewell, or Mr. "Fielding" Jewell, as he was everywhere known, commenced clerking in this father's store, and thus continued for many years. In 1860, he began, on his own account, the business of a general merchant, stock-trader and dealer in tobacco, and met with signal [sic] success. In 1860 [sic], he retired from business, and the remaining years of his life were spent in looking after the affairs of a large property and the lands around his elegant home on Barren river." "Such is the life-history of one of the best known and most esteemed men in all the county. He will be missed and mourned, and his place will long be unfilled in the section in which he lived. He was an honest, upright citizen, a good man and true, and one who discharged all the duties of lifefaithfully and unflinchingly. He leaves a handsome estate and the memory of a long life without spot, stain or blemish. "The funeral took place yesterday evening at 3 o'clock at the home of the deceased on Barren river, and the interment immediately after in the family burying ground near his residence. An immence concourse of friends and relatives paid the last tribute of respect to the departed."
