La Rue was born November 15, 1849, in Hodgensville. He is the second and only living child of James W. and Nancy (Dyer) La Rue. James W. La Rue was born in La Rue County, in 1816, north of Hodgensville. He was a merchant for many years; was a sheriff of La Rue County eight or ten years, and in later life was a farmer. He was a son of James La Rue, who was born in Hardin County about 1785, and who married Phoebe Rathbone. The La Rue family were among the first settlers of La Rue County (see Dr. La Rue's biography in Warren County). Lewis L. La Rue was married September 16, 1869, to Emaline Hayes, daughter of G. B. And Julia A. (Ashcraft) Hayes, and to them two sons have been born: Hugh D. and Weller Lee. After his marriage he engaged in the sewing machine business. In 1871 he entered the drug business in Hodgensville with Dr. S. W. Mathers. In 1874 he purchased a drug store in New Haven, where he continued until 1876, when he went to Lawrenceburg, where he remained until February, 1877, when he returned to Hodgenville, and re-entered the drug business, which he continued until the fall of 1885, when he sold out. For the past ten years he has been dealing in stock to a considerable extent, and has conducted a farm nearly all his life. Mr. La Rue, in January, 1878, was appointed postmaster at Hodgensville, which office he has since filled. He owns a farm of 135 acres, improved with a fine barn and good residence, and also owns several other residences in Hodgensville. He has an interest in a carriage and wagon-making establishing in Hodgensville. Recently Mr. La Rue has engaged in the furniture and undertaking business; he also speculates considerable in real estate, and he lately bought three large tracts of land. Mr. La Rue is a Democrat, and cast his first presidential vote for Horace Greeley. With his wife he is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
