GEORGE LOCKHART was born January 24, 1840, in Tazewell County, Va. In 1868 he moved to Barren County, Ky., where he has since continued to reside. In July, 1861, he enlisted in Company H, Eighth Virginia Cavalry and remained in that service two years. He is the son of John M. Lockhart, also a native of Tazewell County, of which he served as constable and deputy sheriff, and died May 17, 1885, at the age of seventy-five years. His father, Bird Lockhart, of Virginia, was a magistrate and died in 1860, aged eighty years. John M. married Sarah, daughter of Joseph McGuire, of Tazewell County; she died in 1865, aged sixty- five years, and the mother of the following children: Cynthia (Stephenson), Martha (Steel), Elijah, Mary (Claypool), Axley, Milton, Harvey and Simon (twins), Louisa (Steel), Smith, George, Floyd and Matilda (Sizmore) (twins), and Evaline (Hankins). George Lockhart first married, August 5, 1863, Rebecca A., daughter of Meshack and Nancy (Wolford) Steel, of Tazewell County, Va. She was born in 1844, and died December 2, 1866. Their union was blessed by the birth of two children: Charles C. and Louesa. Mr. Lockhart next married, January 30, 1868, Virginia, daughter of Elza and Mary (Vencil) Payne, of Russell County, Va. She was born February 7, 1839, and to them have been born John E., Robert L., Nancy C., William E., Simon and Mary. Mr. Lockhart is a farmer, having 180 acres of productive land in a fine state of cultivation. He is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, and is identified with the Democratic party.
