To: KYF Subject: Luttrell.Walter.C.1942.Casey.OBIT The Casey County News, 1948 REMAINS OF WALTER C. LUTTRELL ARRIVES HOME The remains of Pfc. Walter C. Luttrell arrived at home of his mother, Mrs. Betty Luttrell in this city the past week and were interred in the Poplar Springs Cemetery on Saturday morning, later funeral services conducted at the Poplar Grove church by his former pastor, Rev.H.C. Moxley, assisted by Rev. Robert Lanham. Music for the funeral services was rendered by a chior from the Liberty Baptist church.Pfc. Luttrell, a member of Co.L 7th Infantry, entered the service on February 28,1942, and was killed in the invasion of North Africa on November 10,1942. He spent several months in various camps in theStates before going to England wherehe was given expensive training in preparation for the North African invasion. He was the first man from Casey County to be killed in action,but William W. Smiley of the Navy was the first casualty. Smiley was reported missing when his ship was sunk in the Pacific in 1942.Military funeral rites were given by the firing squad o Casey Post 78 of the American Legion with Chaplin William P. Barrett of Danville conducting the burial services.
