OBIT: Ella Mae Marshall, 2003, Boyle & Casey Co. From the Danville Advocate Messenger, 10 Apr 2003 Ella Mae Marshall, 89, of Parksville, a retired teacher, died Wednesday at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center. She had been a teacher for over 50 years, having taught at Wilsonville Elementary, Indian Creek Elementary in Casey County, and Junction City Elementary schools. She was the first special education teacher in the Boyle County school system and had received a Special Education Educator of the Year award for her work with special needs students. Marshall taught Head Start in 1970 and served as a social worker for the Head Start program from 1971-78. She also was a 4-H club leader and worked with the migrant education program. After retiring from the Boyle County school system in 1977, she continued teaching as a substitute teacher. She was named Kentucky Teacher of the Year in 1981 and was given a Kentucky Education Association District Award in 1982. Marshall also had been involved in getting the old Wilsonville community one-room school renovated. The school, located near Wilson Chapel AME Church where she had been a member for many years, will be named in honor of Marshall. She was the daughter of the late John and Florence Marshall. Survivors include nieces and nephews, including Florence Maye of New York. Services will be 1 p.m. Sunday at Wilson Chapel AME Church by Everhart Walker and Cheryl Blake Hoskins. Visitation will be after 11 a.m. Sunday at the church. Smith-Jackson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. ______________________________
