David Reed Martin was born on December 15, 1893, in Gray, Knox County, Kentucky to John Dalton MARTIN and Lucy Frances Johnson circa 1888-1890.

He married Nannie Serena Walters on December 24, 1915, in Gray, Knox County, Kentucky, and she bore Vernon Eugene Martin on September 18, 1916, and Theodore Roosevel Martin on November 11, 1918.

David Reed Martin served three years in the US Army prior to 1917 and was honorably discharged as a Corporal.

According to his marriage certificate archived at Knox County Clerk's Office in Barbourville, Knox County, Kentucky, at the time of his marriage, David had been living in Kettle "Kittle" Island, in Bell County, working as a coal miner there. 

His draft record indicate that  by June 5, 1917 David had relocated to Gray, Kentucky, with wife Nannie and son Vernon, and was working as a farmer for Clarence Donaldson.
