Vernon Eugene Martin was the son of David Reed Martin and Nannette Serena Walters who married on December 25, 1915 at Gray, Knox County, Kentucky.  
Vernon was born to the couple nive months later on September 18, 1916 at Gray, Knox County, Kentucky.  Vernon had a brother from these same parent, Theodore Roosevelt Martin who was born on November 11, 1918. Theodore fate is unkwown.

Vernon also had a maternal sybling, Bernice Christine Striebel, born on December 15, 1923 at Cleveland.
