Orval E MATHEWS - 26 Feb 1915 - 14 June 1940 "The tragic death of Orville Matthews, 25, Glasgow painter, who was drowned Monday around 2:30 p.m. while seining in Beaver Creek, near Siddens ford, came as a shock to his many friends in Glasgow and Barren county. "Young Matthews, who was accompanied on the fishing trip by Carsie Smith, Garnett Nunn, "Red" Rigsby and Robert Wade, is said to have stepped off the creek bank into a "suck hole" and went under. He arose to the top once and shouted for help. Smith jumped into the creek and was unable to drag Matthew ashore. Neither Matthews or Smith could swim, according to reports. "Wendell Atkinson and George Bailey, residing near the scene of the tragedy, located the body around 4 o'clock Monday afternoon by the use of a boat and grab hooks. It was found within a few feet of where Matthews was last seen struggling in the water. Atkinson and Bailey brought the body to the Crow Funeral home here. "Young Matthews was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Terry Matthews, of the Oleoak- Eighty Eight section, and enjoyed a large acquaintance in Glasgow where he has been employhed as painter for the past five years with Mr. John M. Nelson. "Young Matthews was recognized in athletic circles as one of the best amateur baseball and softball players in this section. He was clever, a good sport, and was universally liked among his fellow comrades. "Besides his parents, he is survived by two brothers, Harold and Emmitt Matthews,. funeral services were held at Poplar Springs Tuesday, at 2 p.m., the Rev. J. L. Dawsey in charge. Burial was in the cemetery there."
