Mayes 1 Aug 1918 - 12 June 1976 Additional article on 22 June 1976. " Edwin J. Mayes. The recent death of Ed Mayes removed from our community one of the valued positive forces for good that has left a remarkable mark on the lives of so many Glasgowans. During his long tenure, some eighteen years, in the Glasgow school system, his high-visioned, loftily-idealized administrative direction has definitely been a strong factor in the development here of one of Kentucky's finest public school programs. His dedicattion to supplying our youth with educational fundamentals under the best possible learning conditions resulted in establish and upgrading teaching programs, provided leadership for facilities expansion, and highly motivated the teaching staffs. His love of education and his loyalty to Glasgow and its precious product of youth must have been a leading motivational factor in the drive and purpose to which he devoted his work here - five years as a high school principal and thirteen years as superintendent of the Glasgow school system. Ed Mayes will long be remembered for lasting contributions he so ably established in setting the pattern for elementary and secondary education - not only in Glasgow - but in Kentucky as well. His niche will remain in the hearts of those who knew him, and in the lives of thousands of youth who were the benefactors of his modest, subtle, yet forceful leadershiip. Glasgow has lost a fine citizen -- one who served his profession and his community in full measure. We join the community in paying our respects to Ed Mayes, and in saying to his family -- whose lost is greatest -- accept the community's deep and abiding appreciation for all of the good things he left with us; and let there be solace in the knowledge that his life was spent for the benefit of others.
