March 16, 1886 Sir; I have the honor to request that you will furnish from the records of the War Department a full report as to the services, disability, and hospital treatment of Henry C. McElroy who, it is claimed enlisted in Co. I 5th Reg’t Ky Calv. And was discharged at Louisville, Ky. May 3, 1865. While serving in Co I 5th Reg’t Ky Cavy, he was disabled by Pneumonia fever, and piles near Nashville, Tenn. About April 15, 1862. Also; Is claimant considered a deserter from April 1862 to June 1864 and if so please state whether the charge of desertion shall stand against him. And was treated in hospitals of which the names, location, and dates of treatment are as follows: In hospital at Columbia, Tenn in April 1862 where he remained a short time, then sent to a hospital in Nashville Tenn, then sent on discharge furlough remained there 18 months and in convalescent Camp at Nashville in the Spring and Summer of 1864. Army ******************************************************************* Declaration for Original Invalid Pension State of Kentucky, Russell County On the 26th day of June, A.D. one thousand eight hundred and 80, personally appeared before me, Clerk of the Russell County Court, a court of record within and for the County and State aforesaid, Henry C. McElroy aged 40 years, a resident of the County of Russell, State of Kentucky, who being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is the identical person who was Enrolled on 11th day of October, 1861 in Company I of the 5th Regiment of Cavalry vols. Commanded by Col. David Maggard, and was honorably discharged at Louisville, KY on the 3rd day of May, 1865; that his personal description is as follows; Age 40 years; height 5 feet 101/2 inches; complexion, Fair; hair, light; eyes, Blue; That while a member of the organization aforesaid, in the service and in the line of his duty at near Nashville, in the State of Tennessee on or about the 15th day of April, 1862, he took sick of Pneumonia fever and was sent to Nashville on the cars, and was put in Hospital at that place & also taken Piles while in said Hospital said piles has been continuous ever since he came out of said service and disables him from performing manual labor and has broke down his constitution and caused him to be confined to his bed a great deal of his time. That since leaving the service this applicant has resided in the County of Russell in the State of Kentucky, and his occupation has been that of a Farmer. That prior to his enrty into the service above named he was a man of good, sound, physical health, being when enrolled as a farmer That he is now Wholly disabled from obtaining his subsistence by manual labor by reason of his injuries, above described, received in the service of the United States; and he therefore makes this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the invalid pension roll of the United States. On this 3rd day of October A.D. 1893, personally appeared before me, a Deputy Clerk in and for the aforesaid County, duly authorized to administer oaths, Lafayette Dunbar, aged 59 years, a resident of the County of Russell, and state of Kentucky, who being duly sworn according to law, stats that he is acquainted with Henry C. McElroy, applicant for Invalid Pension, and know the said Henry C. McElroy, to be the identical person of that name who enlisted or volunteered as a Private in Company I, 5th Regiment of Ky. Cav. Vols., and who was discharged at Louisville on or about 1865, by reason of Expiration of term of service. That the said, Henry C. McElroy while in the line of his duty, at or near Columbia, in the State of Tennessee did, on or about the 1st of April, 1862 become disabled in the following manner. Viz; Claimant taken a bad cold which run into pneumonia fever and had a bad cough which produced a good deal of phlegm mixed with blood and he breathed hard and he was also complaining of his back and side hurting him at that time. (Don’t remember which side) Affiant States that he has met up with claimant often and frequently since his discharge and he always complaining of said disabilities hurting and disabling him all the time up to today. Affiant states that in his opinion claimant is now totally disabled for the performance of manual labor at this time. And deponent further state that he is well acquainted with the claimant having known him for at least 35 years, and further, that his knowledge of the facts above stated is derived from said acquaintance, and from having served as Sergt. Of Company ‘I” of the 5th Regiment of Ky. Cav. Volunteers, from the 8th day of October 1861 to the 16th day of July 1865. And deponent further states that the claimant was a sound and able-bodied man at and prior to enlistment so far as he knew. And that he is totally disinterested in this claim’ His Post Office address of affiant is Jay, Russell County, KY. McElroy, at Louisville, Ky on the 11th day of October A.D. 1861, in Co. I, 5th Reg. Ky Vols Calvary. Private. In the late war of the Rebellion, in the service of the United States, who was honorably discharged May 3rd 1865, and died on the 10 day of Nov. 1896 That the soldier was not in the Military or Naval service of the United States except as above stated. That she was married under the name of Sarah E. McDaniel, to said Henry C. McElroy, on the 15th day of April 1859, by Moses H. Wilson at William McDaniels residence. That she has not remarried since the death of the said Henry C. McElroy. That her Post office address is Montpielier, county of Adair, state of Kentucky. Sarah E.
