David MITCHELL, about 23 years old, the son of James Mitchell, the oldest and wealthiest citizen of this place, and brother of Judge Joseph Mitchell, of Bowling Green, Ky., committed suicide in LOCKE & LESSENBERRY's drug store this morning about 9 o'clock, by shooting himself in the forehead with a 44-calibre British bulldog pistol. In a note to a friend he said he killed himself for the honor of the family. There was no cause for the act so far as is known, other than a depression of spirits following a slight spree. For a year or more he had abstained from drinking until within the last few days. This morning he said to a friend that there were those who seemed greatly pleased when they saw him drink, but that he intended never to drink another drop, and after to-day he would be the quietest boy in town. His tragic death shocked the entire town, and his family are deeply grief-stricken." Shown born 4 Nov 1861, died 5 June 1886. Since the death was reported as occuring the day before being in the 16th paper, it appears the stone was in error or copied wrong.
