MURRAY is the eldest of the ten children of Green V. and Elizabeth (Beeler) Murray, and was born February 25, 1843, in Nelson County, Ky. Green V. Murray is of Scotch-Irish descent, and was born in Taylor County, Ky., January 22, 1817. In early life he learned the saddler's trade, and followed it for many years. He then engaged in the millinery and merchandising business until 1880, when he retired. He is a devoted member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, in which he has held many official positions, and of which his first wife was also a member. His second wife is a member of the Christian Church. His father, William Murray, was a native of Virginia, and one of the pioneers of Taylor County, Ky.; Mrs. Elizabeth Murray was born in lelson County, of German descent, in 1827, and died in May, 1858. She was a daughter of John Beeler, a native of Virginia, and an early settler of Nelson County, Ky. John A. Murray, in January, 1860, went to Lebanon, Ky., where he was engaged in the commission business with his uncle, C. Beeler, until May, 1861. He then enlisted in Company C, Second Kentucky Volunteer Infantry, Confederate States Army, and served with the regiment in all its marches and engagements until the close of the war. He participated in the battles of Fort Donelson, Stone River, Jackson, Missionary Ridge, Dalton, Resaca, Kenesaw Mountain, Atlanta and many others. He was twice taken prisoner; first at Fort Donelson, where he was retained seven months and then exchanged; next at Atlanta, July 22, 1864, where all of his mess of four were killed. After seven months he escaped from Columbus, Ohio; was recaptured, but again escaped from Louisville in April, 1865. After the war he engaged in the life insurance business at Louisville, and for four years was State agent for the Southern Mutual Life Insurance Company. In 1869 he came to Glasgow, and in the following year was appointed agent for the Glasgow Railway Company at this place, which position he still holds. He is still engaged in the coal ad salt trade, handling nearly all of these commodities that are used in the place. May 17, 1870, he married Eugenia Garnett, who was born August 24, 1850, in Glasgow, Ky., a daughter of Joseph R. Garnett. Mr. and Mrs. Murray are members of the Missionary Baptist Church; he is also a member of the Masonic fraternity, the I. O. O. F. and K. of P. He is one of the town trustees, and also a trustee of Liberty Female College; is president of the Glasgow Water Company and the Glasgow Telephone Company. Politically he is a Democrat.
