Mr. J. F. Vanarsdall returned yesterday from Somerset where he was summoned by the sad death of his mother-in-law. The death of Mrs. Mary Newell Owens, wife of Dr. S. R. Owens, was as sad as it was unfortunate and a shock to her many friends here, She had gone to the garden Wednesday, afternoon to plant some garden seed and having raked up some dry grass set it on fire, The wind blew the burning grass, and the dry cornstalks around a favorite young apple tree were ignited. While attempting to extinguish this little fire Mrs. Owens’ dress ignited and soon she was enveloped in flames. She could not roll on the ground and smother out the flames for the grass all around her was ablaze and as she started for the house she set fire to the grass in her pathway. Unable to unbutton her dress, she tried to tear it off on the garden gate and even set fire to the gate Dr. Owens, attracted by her screams, ran out with a blanket and finally smothered out the flames but not until she was fatally burned. She lived until the next evening dying in the full hope of a blessed hereafter. She was sixty-seven years of age and had for many years been a consistent member of the Presbyterian church. Mrs. Vanarsdall will remain several days with her father, returning home Friday.
