Powell December 17, 1837 - Adair County KyArchives Biography Author: Kentucky Genealogy and Biography, Volume II, Battle-Perrin-Kniffin, Vol. V, 4th edition, 1886 JOHN W. POWELL, a native of Adair County, was born December 17, 1837. His father, Kelsoe Powell, also a native of Adair County, was born in 1796, and his life-long occupation was milling. He was married first to a Miss Grider, and they were the parents of one child, Harriet, wife of Josiah Sparks. After the death of his first wife, Mr. Powell was married to Miss Oney Gilkey, a daughter of Jonathan Gilkey, a native of Adair County, and the farmer of a large family of children, most of whom now live in Missouri. By his second marriage, Mr. Powell became the father of eight children: Polly Ann, wife of Archelaus Strange; Rosa E., wife of Robert H. Caldwell; James, John W., Jeptha T., Elizabeth M., Frances, wife of Thomas Carter, and Louis C., all of whom are living. Kelsoe Powell was owner of a mill on Powell's Creek, a branch of Crocus Creek, an besides cultivated a farm of 400 acres, most of which was in timber. His death occurred in 1875; that of his wife, August 3, 1882, in the seventy-ninth year of her age. John Powell, grandfather of John W. Powell, was a Virginian and a farmer, who settled in Adair county while it was yet an unbroken wilderness. He cleared, cultivated and owned about 400 acres of land in the county, but was never wealthy. He was the father of six children, only two of whom remained in Adair County, the rest emigrating to other parts of Kentucky. John W. Powell in youth acquired a good business education in the county schools, and also attended the high school at Campbellsville a few months. He remained on the home farm until he reached his majority, and then taught in the common schools about three years, after which he commenced purchasing tobacco for a New York firm, which was his business for the next three years in connection with farming. Mr. Powell was married October 1, 1867, to Miss Laura T. Botts, a daughter of Thompson and Elizabeth (Moore) Botts, natives of Virginia. Mr. and Mrs. Powell had born to them six children: Thompson, Leslie, Birdie, Lillie and Nora; Annie, who was the third child, died infancy. Mr. Powell first purchased 160 acres of land, which was well improved; three years later he sold and purchased 170 acres, on which he remained ten years. His present farm of 175 aces, near Glenville, he settled in 1880, and this has since been his home; 200 acres are cleared and in cultivation. Mr. Powell is purchasing tobacco in the Louisville market, and he also buys and raises stock. He began life with no inheritance, but has always been a successful trader, and is at present in comfortable circumstances. Mr. and Mrs. Powell are both members of the Christian Church of Glenville.
